Business systems consulting
A better way to work. Not just more software.
I work with business owners and leadership teams to understand how the business runs, decide what is worth changing, and build the software that makes that change possible.
Talk about your businessThe person who understands the business is the person doing the work.
Business advice, practical decisions and hands-on software development, with one person accountable for the agreed work.
01 / Start with the business
Your business can be doing well and still have room to work better.
You may already have good people, satisfied customers and useful software. The opportunity is often in how those parts work together. A customer promise made in a sales conversation needs to reach the people delivering it. A change to a project needs to reach the person planning next week. A useful report needs to arrive while someone can still act on it.
I start by understanding your goals, how you make money and what happens during a normal working week. I speak with the people doing the work, follow real examples and look at the tools already in use. We identify what should stay as well as what could change.
02 / Choose the right work
Sometimes we connect. Sometimes we build. Sometimes we leave it alone.
Custom software is useful when your way of working needs something that a standard product cannot sensibly provide. It is not automatically the best answer. Configuration, a clearer responsibility or a small connection between existing tools may do more for less effort.
When something does need building, I can work on internal tools, web applications, customer-facing software and connections between services. We choose the work around a real business need, not around a fashionable technology.
- Give sales and delivery a shared view of what has been promised.
- Bring information from existing tools into a useful working view.
- Replace repeated copying with a checked, reliable transfer.
- Build a calculator, approval process or internal application around how your team actually works.
03 / Stay close to the work
You get involvement, not a specification passed down a chain.
I can work with your team over an agreed period, combining regular conversations and practical advice with building the agreed software. As I learn more about your customers, services and people, we can make better decisions about what comes next.
Before starting, we agree the scope, responsibilities, time commitment, fee and how changes will be handled. A monthly arrangement can spread the work and cost over a defined period. It does not mean unlimited requests or a full-time employee for a fixed software price.
04 / Know whether it helped
Agree what better looks like before calling it a success.
For a reporting task, we might compare the time needed and how often figures need correcting. For a customer handover, we might look at missing information and repeated questions. For a new tool, we need to see whether the team uses it without maintaining a second version elsewhere.
The measures depend on your business. I do not promise a particular revenue increase or pretend that installing software proves an improvement.
A few useful answers.
How is this different from hiring a development agency?
A development team can build an agreed specification. My involvement starts with understanding the business and deciding what should be built, then stays close to the team using it. You work directly with me.
Do we need a large replacement system?
No. We can start with one important piece of work. Existing software stays where it is useful, and we agree what is worth changing.
Is this only for Manchester businesses?
No. I am based in Manchester and work remotely with businesses across the UK. Any on-site time, travel and availability are agreed before starting.
What should we discuss first?
Tell me what your business does, the result you want and how things work today. You do not need a technical specification. We can establish whether there is a useful fit before scoping work.
The conversation comes first
Tell me what you want the business to do better.
A short outline of the business, how things work today and where you want to get to is enough to start. Please leave out passwords and private customer information.
